Seamless
Structural Integration
Our structural engineers are an integral part of our design studios. They sit in amongst the architects and interior designers to promote collaboration and enhance learning environment design.
We partner to Co-Create
Our structural engineers collaborate closely with the architects to determine a proposed building’s structural design. They integrate the structure with the architecture, and decide which structural system is best suited to the holistic design. They also consult on and conduct structural investigations to analyze an existing building’s fitness, viability and general condition.
Our design process continues to evolve and become more efficient as structural engineering is integrated from the very beginning. Co-creating in this way ensures a thoughtful, elegant structural system is achieved that complements and supports the desired architecture. Working within the design studio allows our engineers to work through structural issues that may arise more effectively.

TRAILWOOD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Shawnee Mission School District came to Hollis + Miller in 2015 to design a new school while the existing facility remained in operation on the same site. During construction safety and security were paramount, not only for the construction workers but also for the students just a few feet from the construction activities.

JUST ADD
COFFEE
The formula for a standard architect was spelled out for me by a close friend the other day: Black clothing + round glasses + ankle boots + coffee in hand. Not many people around our office fit most of that description, but the common denominator is a big one: coffee in hand. Coffee = Life. Instant Human, Just Add Coffee. Insert any other coffee cliché you want here… they’re all true.
