A state-of-the-art prep kitchen and teaching area offers students endless opportunities to refine their culinary skills in a real-world, restaurant style setting.

Student interest in the culinary program has steadily grown in recent years and supported the need for an updated learning environment, leading to a new, stand-alone facility adhering to budget and site restraints of the existing building’s footprint. Owned and operated by the Raytown School District, the culinary program is part of the Herndon Career Center, which provides high school students from Raytown and neighboring districts with the opportunity to gain hands-on learning experiences in areas such as nursing, automotive technology, cosmetology, welding, law enforcement and more.

Cinder (the building’s name) was conceptualized with materials of metal, wood and the idea of fire, a tribute to Raytown’s founder, who was a blacksmith. Inside, the main entrance features a built-in fireplace, warmly welcoming guests and students alike. The state-of-the-art kitchen puts learning on display, connecting to the dining area through open-air windows where patrons can interact with students as they work. The prep kitchen also features a demonstration area with integrated technology, including a mirrored camera and display system, allowing students to follow along with the head chef as they craft meals together. Learning and meal preparation are both on display in this modern approach to a career training environment.
