A new face for Grain Valley High School provides a prominent sense of arrival and display of school pride.

Upon arrival at Grain Valley High School, students and visitors are guided in along the impressive, curved, blue CMU wall that begins at the entry and continues throughout the interior, comprising the spine of the building and dubbed “Eagle Way”. The raised entrance increases visibility from the street while improving traffic flow for student drop-off and pick-up.

Similar to a central college campus union, the media center represents the heart of the school, branded by a large glass eagle graphic that is visible from both inside and out. Glass dividers promote connectivity to the lecture hall, makerspace and small group collaboration rooms while providing views into the expansive courtyard. Tiered seating in the courtyard provides an outdoor learning area and offers dynamic spaces for students to socialize.

Grain Valley High School is currently home to nearly 1,100 students but is master planned to accommodate up to 1,600 high school students in the rapidly growing community. While working with the district throughout a five-phase master plan, Hollis + Miller became very familiar with the goals and priorities of the district and community.

Colorful graphics and an interactive playground at Liggett Trail Early Education Center connect students with the natural environment while providing a safe, nurturing home for young learners.

At the end of a meandering drive surrounded by trees and greenery, the addition to Liggett Trail Early Education Center blends seamlessly with the existing building and fosters curiosity, learning and joy. Natural daylighting fills every inch of the space, accentuated by environmental graphics depicting the four seasons and various climates for students to explore throughout the winding corridors. Young minds are immersed in colorful, intentional learning spaces serving functional purposes. The new classrooms each boast a dishwasher, diaper changing station and shared accessible restrooms, all necessities to provide a comfortable and nurturing environment for the tiniest of learners.

Athletics take center stage at University of St. Mary. With 75% of the student population being athletes, they needed a complex that could host all its athletes and fans on campus.

The complex’s inaugural homecoming celebration was the largest game day attendance in school history, with students, faculty, alumni, family and friends all coming together to celebrate the its Athletics new home.

A soccer field and synthetic turf football field are joined by a two-sided press box with hospitality area. Locker rooms, concessions and a multipurpose space are housed on the first floor of the press box.

Designed in tandem, Rising Hill and Northview Elementary Schools provide flexible, collaborative spaces that serve every type of learner.

Reinforcing a district-wide emphasis on literacy, the heart of these two schools are spacious, exposed media centers that push the envelope of a traditional library. Students have opportunities to gather on a learning stair for lessons, collaborate in smaller groups, or focus in a nook on an independent project or to enjoy their favorite book.

The academic neighborhoods set the stage for differentiated learning, accommodating every type of lesson and learner. Classrooms with garage doors are adjacent to collaborative spaces, amplifying space for group activities, breakout sessions or individualized learning. Writeable locker surfaces give students a sense of pride and ownership of their space, reinforcing an environment that is truly designed for the students.

As a forward-thinking district, the two elementary schools contain individual, single occupancy bathroom stalls that promote safety and privacy to ensure that every student feels comfortable in their environment.

An integrated fabrication lab brings forth many opportunities for engineering majors, art majors and the surrounding community.

Metropolitan Community College is relocating the Engineering Technology program from the Business and Technology Campus to the Penn Valley Campus to increase utilization of their existing building and create synergies between the college’s graphic design diagram and the engineering technology program.

Functions such as the fabrication lab and the 3D printing lab offer regular opportunities for students to collaborate, ideate and prototype in a shared space that will now be available to the graphic design program housed in the current Carter Arts Building. The physical placement of the program on the south edge of the Penn Valley campus is seen as a means of being a visible and usable asset to the community from which they can also access tools and technical expertise provided by talented and industry-connected faculty. In addition, it will feature a double-height space for the fabrication lab with greater connectivity to the exterior environment through the use of extensive glazing and covered outdoor spaces offering students their choice of environments in which to create.

The stadium’s natural site is located within an existing quarry and will create a unique environment for many future student, community and athletic events.

Hollis + Miller was tasked with redesigning a new 10,000-seat stadium for Southeast Missouri State University (SEMO) to transform its 91-year-old existing stadium into a new front porch for Redhawk athletics and SEMO’s campus. Focusing on the player, fan and recruiting experience was key to help form a new identity and provide a multi-phase, multi-use development revitalizing the gateway connecting the University and downtown Cape Girardeau.

As one of the largest, most ambitious construction projects in the university’s nearly 150-year history, the project will transform SEMO’s stadium into a vibrant multi-use complex spanning nearly 10-acres. The facility will provide more than 175,000 square feet of flexible, high-capacity, and modern space to house academic programs, provide space for experiential learning activities supported by public-private partnerships, create venues for economic and community events, and renovate space for athletic competitions (University, high school and community).

The project is the result of the University’s desire to create an integrated, hybrid facility focusing on SEMO students, faculty, and staff – academically, personally, and professionally – designed to serve visitors and members of the community. Located within an existing quarry, our team seized the opportunity to expose the natural qualities of the rock to create a unique environment for fans to gather and engage, creating memorable experiences tailored to individual needs.

Middle school students feel like they have their own space to learn and grow separate from the elementary school students. Their new space supports expanded student collaboration and project-based learning.

Students can collaborate in the new classrooms with glass walls that provide ample daylight and open up to accommodate large and small-groups, including to the outdoors, encouraging classes to spill outside for learning and experimenting. This flexibility continues into the new dining commons, which features a variety of seating options, giving students more freedom.

The new Lenexa City Center Library is a source of inspiration, innovation and experiences that will enrich the surrounding community.

Located in the heart of Lenexa’s contemporary city center, this development is helping establish a new downtown for the city. Adjacent to a city hall, community center, restaurants and public market, the library welcomes all members of the community.

To achieve total flexibility, the majority of the library is an open loft-like space that houses the adult, teen, and juvenile collections on two levels. A two-story atrium serves as the living room for the community. Three large flexible meeting spaces and four smaller meeting spaces can be utilized by both library staff and community members and will provide access to technology for community groups, tutoring, and collaborative discussions. Patron convenience is at the forefront of the library’s automated conveyance system that allows patrons to both pick up holds and drop off returns via a drive-thru in the parking garage. The new library incorporates a service model designed to enhance public access to the collections, focus services to patrons, and integrate patron self-service strategies and staff mobility.

This new library is meant to engage the community. The Community commons visually connects to the civic plaza, street, and public market. The upper and lower entries allow for ease of patron access from both the Civic Center and Public Plaza.

Thirty-foot high towering glass and zinc shingled walls fold across two sides of the building and allow for connectivity between the outdoor plaza and library patrons. These folding walls are unified by a curving railing that weaves between the interior and exterior of the building. This ribbon-like railing draws patrons walking along the public plaza toward the library’s two entrances.

The Independence Uptown Market is the combined vision of citizens, farmers and business owners brought from idea to reality within the span of 18 months. An open-air pavilion paired with an enclosed farmers market pavilion offer a venue for local craftsmen to sell their goods. The enclosed venue offers the opportunity to host regional events that will bring commerce into the city, as well as weddings, parties and corporate events. The new building revitalizes the central area and offers a collaborative gathering space that will benefit citizens and business owners alike for years to come and fosters a sense of community.
