A new face for Grain Valley High School provides a prominent sense of arrival and display of school pride.

Upon arrival at Grain Valley High School, students and visitors are guided in along the impressive, curved, blue CMU wall that begins at the entry and continues throughout the interior, comprising the spine of the building and dubbed “Eagle Way”. The raised entrance increases visibility from the street while improving traffic flow for student drop-off and pick-up.

Similar to a central college campus union, the media center represents the heart of the school, branded by a large glass eagle graphic that is visible from both inside and out. Glass dividers promote connectivity to the lecture hall, makerspace and small group collaboration rooms while providing views into the expansive courtyard. Tiered seating in the courtyard provides an outdoor learning area and offers dynamic spaces for students to socialize.

Grain Valley High School is currently home to nearly 1,100 students but is master planned to accommodate up to 1,600 high school students in the rapidly growing community. While working with the district throughout a five-phase master plan, Hollis + Miller became very familiar with the goals and priorities of the district and community.

Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary

Mathena Student Center

A primarily commuter campus that once provided few amenities for its students, now has a space where they can gather, eat, study and exercise.

The result has been awe-inspiring. Students who once went directly to their vehicles to leave campus after class are now stopping by the center to grab a coffee and study with friends. Ping pong games are in progress, students are jogging on the track, and you can find children playing games. The Midwestern Baptist community now has a place to gather.

With a dining facility, bookstore and coffee shop, study space, recreation room, gym with track, Crossfit exercise room, child watch and alumni entertainment space, this student center’s design needed to be purposeful to seamlessly integrate all these unique services in a way that invited students to make themselves at home in the space.

Since its founding in 1957, it has been a major goal of the Seminary to open a student center that can serve its students outside of academic and spiritual growth. Hollis + Miller Architects worked with the school to master plan where the facility could sit on campus and how it could hold the variety of amenities they were hoping to offer.

Learning has no bounds at the new Summit Trail Middle School.

In order to accommodate their growing student population, Olathe Public School’s needed a 10th middle school. Adapted from their most recently completed middle school, Summit Trail provides a familiar and functional space while pushing the boundaries of customized learning.

Open corridors blur the line of circulation and usable space. Located in each learning pod are “genius bars” with fully integrated technology for small group collaboration. Glazing provides transparency from classrooms to common spaces, encouraging breakout participation. Moveable furniture elevates the learning environment by providing students and teachers the flexibility to customize their space at any given moment.

An integrated fabrication lab brings forth many opportunities for engineering majors, art majors and the surrounding community.

Metropolitan Community College is relocating the Engineering Technology program from the Business and Technology Campus to the Penn Valley Campus to increase utilization of their existing building and create synergies between the college’s graphic design diagram and the engineering technology program.

Functions such as the fabrication lab and the 3D printing lab offer regular opportunities for students to collaborate, ideate and prototype in a shared space that will now be available to the graphic design program housed in the current Carter Arts Building. The physical placement of the program on the south edge of the Penn Valley campus is seen as a means of being a visible and usable asset to the community from which they can also access tools and technical expertise provided by talented and industry-connected faculty. In addition, it will feature a double-height space for the fabrication lab with greater connectivity to the exterior environment through the use of extensive glazing and covered outdoor spaces offering students their choice of environments in which to create.

Designed in tandem, Rising Hill and Northview Elementary Schools provide flexible, collaborative spaces that serve every type of learner.

Reinforcing a district-wide emphasis on literacy, the heart of these two schools are spacious, exposed media centers that push the envelope of a traditional library. Students have opportunities to gather on a learning stair for lessons, collaborate in smaller groups, or focus in a nook on an independent project or to enjoy their favorite book.

The academic neighborhoods set the stage for differentiated learning, accommodating every type of lesson and learner. Classrooms with garage doors are adjacent to collaborative spaces, amplifying space for group activities, breakout sessions or individualized learning. Writeable locker surfaces give students a sense of pride and ownership of their space, reinforcing an environment that is truly designed for the students.

As a forward-thinking district, the two elementary schools contain individual, single occupancy bathroom stalls that promote safety and privacy to ensure that every student feels comfortable in their environment.

Providing contemporary, comfortable residence for students and young professionals, the STL 505 housing complex will span over almost an entire city block.

Located in the core of downtown Springfield and right off historic Route 66, this brand-new housing complex serves students and young professionals in an urban setting. The five-story, 500+ bed building is a short walk to Missouri State University’s campus and conveniently located along the university’s transit line. On-site amenities include underground parking, a coffee house, recreation spaces, fitness center, study rooms and private courtyards complete with grills and outdoor seating. Flexible gathering areas are designed for socialization or individual escapes, and an enclosed pet area is available for the pet-friendly residents. This contemporary complex is a desirable residence in a revitalized downtown area.
